Not only are we showing the movie – but we’ll have the writer behind ‘More Brains’ in attendance, Gary Smart! (‘More Brains’ is the definitive RotLD documentary which is featured on the Collectors Edition of the film.) After the film, Gary will be chatting to us about the film and its legacy. He’ll be happy to take questions on the movie, the doc, the stars involved, or you can chat with him about his other filmmaking projects as Dead Mouse Productions [link]

The good folk of Sanctuary Bar in Liverpool [link] will be our hosts for the night. Sanctuary is a self described ‘Dive Bar & Drinking Den’ operated by the Design 4 Life Tattoo crew. It’s a great place, staffed by folk who appreciate the horror culture. We’ll be in the basement, which is an intimate setup – max 40 capacity.

I should state that is not a cinema location. We will be using cabaret style seating (tables& chairs, rather than rows of seats), and expect it to be more of a fun atmospheric night, rather than a hushed cinema-going experience. just finished up with a series of nine paintings…

they were a bit of an experiment tbh, as i often have people tell me they’d love one of my paintings but can’t afford them. so this was an attempt to do a bunch of really cheap pieces that all had their own charm.

and my absolute favourite things to paint are skulls and eyeballs.. so these pieces kind of painted themselves.

the event kicked off on thursday 31st Oct – halloween night! – with screenings of hellrasier & hellbound. there was a victorian séance, and to round the night off they showed the amazing new zombie flic ‘stalled’ [watch the trailer here] followed by a Q&A session.

but i wasn’t just there as a festival go-er, i was also on hand (along with fellow MUA Heather Vickers), to provide speedy zombie-makeovers for anyone who was game!

on the friday, there was a horror quiz (which my team won – yay!) followed by a live musical performance as the original and remake evil dead movies were screened simultaneously

saturday afternoon, FX artist Shaune Harrison (whose work includes Harry Potter/ World WarZ/ Game of Thrones) gave a make-up demonstration. this was probably the highlight of the weekend for myself. getting to see such an amazing artist do his thing up close, whilst chatting and fielding questions from the audience.

there were a few other things going on in the evening too, including a music performance by El Diablo! again, i was on zombie makeover duty!

i was lucky enough to be included in The Lowe Photobooth Project - which is an amazing project featuring all manner of creative and interesting folk based in Liverpool, shot in the photobooth aesthetic.

naturally, I attended the photoshoot splattered with blood.

a lady from the states asked me if i could do a portrait of her three dogs, after they’d been struck by the zombie plague. naturally i said yes.

this is what the dogs looked like before Z-day…

you see, i’ve applied to paint a life-size gorilla in Norwich’s GoGoGorilla campaign [link]. you know the type of thing, where there are dozens of gorillas scattered throughout the city, all painted up in different designs? well, naturally the design i submitted was of a zombie gorilla! i wont find out whether it’ll get sponsored until the end of february, but i’m keeping my fingers crossed!

however, the gorillas are about 6ft tall! so i thought it prudent to have a trial run of my design style on a much smaller scale – hence the zombie penguin!

you can see how tall it is compared to the mug in the photo above, but the method and style of painting on either piece would actually be very similar. you can check out some progress shots of the paint job over on my facebook page [link].

however, this is pretty much the final paint job…

it really has been informative as a trial run, and i’m pleased with the outcome.

so a few last touches, and a coat of varnish will see this little guy finished. then all he’ll need is a name and a new home!

this afterparty was organised by the folks at inside out adventures. it featured a suitably apocalyptic themed playlist, zombie vs. survivor dance-offs, and a mass thriller dance amongst other things.

i mentioned a short while ago [link] that i was part of the make-up team for 2.8 hours later in liverpool.

well, these are a couple of my photos of the infected…

i was mainly on blood duty for the duration, splattering copious amounts of the red stuff onto the zombie population.  but i also spent some time doing the base make-up, giving these guys the death-like pallor that makes them look so, well… dead!

on top of prepping all of the zombies who were loose on the streets, we also got to zombify all of the survivors who didn’t survive. across the 4 days, i reckon we must created well over 500 zombies, possibly creeping up to the 1000 mark!

the company behind it all, slingshot, are a fantastic group to work with, and they have a real focus on giving those taking part a great experience.
