do rainbows happen over the ocean?  …they must. right?!

regardless, i was going for a piratey theme on this one.. though it does have more of a leaning towards the aquatic world in general.

still uncertain of a title yet. how about,  ”when the rivers run red  …and orange, and yellow, and green, et al..”. bit too cheesy perhaps. i do like, “death at sea” - but the picture is teeming with life, so it’s a bit of a misnomer! any thoughts?

when i posted a previous painting [link], i wrote that it was a bit of a turning point. this particular painting sees me playing again with the themes of macabre imagery alongside vibrant colours.

it was quite a journey getting to this point too. i only had a vague idea of where i wanted it to go at the outset, and as i painted, and repainted, and repainted, it evolved and took on it’s own direction. it took around 6 weeks to get to this stage, and im not convinced it’s actually finished yet either!

i documented the creation process on my facebook page [link], with regular photos and comments regarding my feelings towards the piece. anyway, here it is in its current state!

‘the rainbow’s end

i’ve always used traditionally macabre subject matter (such as skulls, cadavers, monsters) in my work. but this was the first time i’d deliberately combined it with an intense vibrancy of colour.

there were a few facets to this piece as it developed; it was painted on a canvas that i’d previously been using as a palette. and there is a soundwave running the length of the piece

the spine flows sympathetically along this centreline like a sinewave. also the spectrum of colours in the background correspond to the relevant chakra positions of the spine.

this is the finished piece..

i adore this piece for a couple of reasons. firstly, that it has had more of impact on my style than any other in recent years. and secondly that it turned out excatly how i’d imagined it – which is an incredibly rare achievement for me!
